The BBKA Guide to Beekeeping

Why buy this book?

There is a huge amount of information available to the budding beekeeper - too much! It's useful to have a few key books to start off.  This book is a good one to have because:

  • It covers all the main areas of beekeeping

  • It doesn't use any jargon and doesn't assume any prior knowledge

  • There are lots of good colour photographs and step-by-step illustrations

  • It is pretty new and so has up to date descriptions of bee diseases and their management. Some beekeeping websites etc refer to older books - they can be really useful but will have been written before the bee diseases faced by todays' beekeeper.

This guide is the only one endorsed  by the BBKA. The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) represents more than 25,000 UK "hobby" beekeepers. With local associations all around the country, it is often the first port of call for a new beekeeper.

Local associations often provide hands on training and this book is a back-up to that. It is also useful if you decide to take the BBKA's Basic Examination.

If you decide not to join the BBKA, this book still provides a useful introduction to honeybees and beekeeping.

Every new beekeeper has more questions than answers. This book will help answer many of them without getting too bogged down. It is an introduction though, so you may want to add a few other titles to your bookshelf - I've also included some of these in the book selection.

Each in their own way add something. This is particularly true for advice on swarming and swarm control techniques which can seem completely confusing when you start out.

Just so you know - recommendations are my own, based on personal experience of reading/using the book. It would be great to sell the book direct but as a small business this is hard to do so Harry's Honey is a participant in Amazon Associates LLC. This is an affiliate advertising programme. It is designed to provide a way for sites to earn fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.co.uk and of course, a way to make the books we love available to you.
